What is engorgement and how to avoid it?

By: Admin

During the early stage of breastfeeding, you will feel that your breasts larger, heavier, and tender. And this feeling is normal. However, if your breasts become very hard and feel painful, you might have developed engorgement. The breasts might also feel swelling, tenderness, warmth, redness, and throbbing. Engorgement is usually caused by the milk building up, which happens during the third to fifth day after birth.

Other factors can also cause engorgement such as poor latch-on, infrequent feedings, overusing pacifier, going back to work too soon causing feeding sudden schedule change, or too much milk supply. You should try to prevent engorgement since it can lead to a breast infection if not cared for. With proper treatment, engorgement lasts one to two days. If it doesn't go away, see your doctor.
